Transgender Student Safety Project
TLC is changing school environments by working with the California Safe Schools Coalition to ensure that California statutes preventing discrimination and harassment against transgender public school students are meaningfully enforced. In 2002, TLC was active in the creation of model policies for schools to implement in order to protect their transgender and gender non-conforming students and staff. In 2003, the San Francisco Unified School District adopted many of these policies as district wide regulations. In 2004, the Los Angeles Unified School district also adopted guidelines.
TLC provides workshops around the state helping school staff members
and attorneys that advise schools better understand the ways in
which transgender students are alienated from the school environment
because of anti-transgender bias. If your school would like to get
more information about hosting a free transgender student safety
workshop, please check out our flyer or contact our Policy Advocate,
Danielle Castro, at dcastro@transgenderlawcenter.org or (415) 513-5166.
