Leadership Development

In 2002, we worked with our good friends at Equality California to begin gathering activists and allies from around the state for monthly statewide policy calls. The goal was to broaden the circle of voices informing important legislative and policy issues. These calls developed over time into the Transgender Equality Alliance (TEA). TEA holds monthly public policy discussion and planning calls. Through these calls, TEA has crafted several pieces of statewide legislation and planned transgender health care legislative hearings in 2004 and 2005. To get more info about TEA, send up an email (info@transgenderlawcenter.org).

In 2005, TEA members came up with the idea of an in-person meeting that quickly evolved into the 2006 California Transgender Leadership Summit -- a free, three-day skills building and networking conference for recognized and emerging leaders within the community. Planned on a tight timeline with a shoestring budget, the Summit brought together, for the first time in recent memory, more than 100 community members from around California gathered at the University of Southern California (USC) to participate in nine workshops and two community discussions. You can find a full report on the Summit here.

In the summer of 2006, planning for the 2nd Annual Summit began. Over 20 organizations and three dozen individuals worked to plan and host Leaders Working Together for Equality at USC in March of 2007. Over 200 community members and allies registered for the 2007 California Transgender Leadership Summit. You can get a full report on what topics were covered and who came to this second free event here.

The planning for the 3rd Annual Leadership Summit is now in motion. We are looking for suitable location in Northern Califonia for next year's summit. If you're interested in helping to plan the 2008 Summit, send us an email (info@transgenderlawcenter.org) so we can get you on the list.
